Business Occupational License

The Occupational License Division of the City of Newport´s Finance and Administration Department is responsible for performing the following activities:

ISSUANCE OF: Occupational Licenses, Dog Licenses, and Yard Sale Permits.

COLLECTS: Occupational License fees from Businesses and Commercial and Residential Rental Property, Payroll Withholding Fees on all wages earned within the City, and the Municipal Premium Fee which is assessed on most insurance premiums written for individuals and businesses in the city. TEMPORARY VENDORS: Temporary vendor licenses are available but they are subject to certain restrictions:

--No temporary vendor license will be issued for use on a permanent site on any public property. Any temporary vendor license issued for use on public property will be for mobile vending only and require the holder to move from place to place. At no time can a holder of a temporary vendor license block a public right of way.

--A temporary vendor license issued for use on private property must include written permission from the owner. All business on private property must be conducted within an enclosed area.

SPECIAL EVENTS: The licensing of vendors for any special event, like Riverfest or Tall Stacks will be conducted by a private contractor hired by the City to organize the event. All of the fees for Special Events will be determined by the organizer with the approval of the City Administration. Vending in the Riverfront area is prohibited without the permission of Newport City government officials. The Riverfront area is defined as any location north of 4th Street and bordered by the Licking River on the West and the Taylor Creek on the East.

YARD SALE PERMITS- Yard Sale permits are limited to 2 per person or 2 per address during the City´s Fiscal year. The fee for the permit is $ 10.00. Permits for block sales are available. Yard Sales conducted by non-profit groups for a non-profit purpose are exempt from the fee but still require the permit and are limited to 2 per organization or 2 per address. Yard Sale Permits are issued on a rain or shine basis.

DOG LICENSES-

Dog Licenses are no longer required unless your dog falls into the vicious dog category. Your dog must be registered with the City as indicated in Ordinance O-2008- 017 in the City of Newport Municipal Code.

SALE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: For information on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages, please contact the City´s Alcoholic Beverage Control Administrator.
