CALEA Accreditation
The Newport Police Department was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA) from 1998 to 2010, when it withdrew from the process. In July 2024, the agency signed back up with CALEA and began its self-assessment phase. The agency will undergo the on-site assessment in August 2025 and look to be accredited in November 2025.
CALEA is a non-profit agency founded in 1979 to establish a series of professional standards for law enforcement agencies throughout the world. The accreditation program is open to all types of law enforcement agencies. It provides a process to systematically conduct an internal review and assessment of the agencies' policies and procedures and make adjustments wherever necessary to meet a body of internationally accepted standards. These standards, upon which the program is based, reflect the current thinking and experience of law enforcement practitioners and researchers. Major law enforcement associations, leading educational and training institutions, governmental agencies, as well as law enforcement executives internationally, acknowledge CALEA and its Accreditation Program as benchmarks for today's law enforcement agency.
• CALEA Accreditation requires an agency to develop a comprehensive, well-thought out, uniform set of written directives. This is one of the most successful methods for reaching administrative and operational goals, while also providing direction to personnel.
• CALEA Accreditation standards provide the necessary reports and analyses a CEO needs to make fact-based, informed management decisions.
• CALEA Accreditation requires a preparedness program be put in place - so an agency is ready to address natural or man-made unusual occurrences.
• CALEA Accreditation is a means for developing or improving upon an agency's relationship with the community.
• CALEA Accreditation strengthens an agency's accountability, both within the agency and the community, through a continuum of standards that clearly define authority, performance, and
Being CALEA Accredited can limit an agency's liability and risk exposure because it demonstrates that internationally recognized standards for law enforcement have been met, as verified by a team of independent outside CALEA-trained assessors.
• CALEA Accreditation facilitates an agency's pursuit of professional excellence.

CALEA Public Comment Portal:
As part of our ongoing CALEA Accreditation process, CALEA has created a public comment portal for each of its accredited agencies. The purpose of this portal is to receive public comments regarding an agency's compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence and this new approach works to further that objective.
IMPORTANT: CALEA is not an investigatory body, and subsequently, the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgment of submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevance to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.
